The Virginia Aquarium is looking for a multifaceted diver to assist in the daily husbandry of aquarium exhibits and associated field operations. As the animal care team’s full-time diver, this individual will be responsible to ensure the team is always equipped to dive. Safety is paramount. Dive Operations serves Fishes, Invertebrates, Herpetology, Mammals, and Education sections among others. Work and dive amid all sections of the aquarium!
Duties will include the following:
- Work closely with animal care staff to inspect exhibits, perform daily system maintenance activities, and perform underwater repairs as needed
- Perform inspections, repair, preventative service, and inventory of SCUBA equipment. Fill air cylinders.
- Assist in maintaining detailed up-to-date dive program records including but not limited to equipment maintenance logs, training and risk management logs, dive logs, and animal observation records.
- Work with animal care and veterinary staff to assist with in-water animal husbandry procedures when necessary
- Support Aquarium field dive activities and collecting efforts

MINIMUMS: Requires any combination of education (above the high school level) and/or experience equivalent to two (2) years in fields utilizing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities and associated with positions such as Diver, Maintenance Diver, Dive Master, Dive Instructor, SCUBA Equipment Service Technician. Must possess current SCUBA certification of Rescue Diver or higher from a World Recreational SCUBA Training Council agency. Must have a current and valid drivers license. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be available to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime when required to meet operational needs. This position may require that incumbents wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, or other safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employees supervisor based on position assigned. This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to mandatory drug testing. Positive drug test results may result in counseling and/or discipline, up to and including, termination. Positions within this class have been designated as Alpha I requiring employees to work during inclement weather, regardless of the Citys operational status. This position requires the incumbent to remain certified in First-Aid, CPR and AED use. If not already trained, this training must be obtained within 6 months of employment. Successful completion of a pre-employment physical.

Experience as a professional/working diver. Experience in SCUBA equipment service and repair. Experience diving in public aquariums. Experience conducting repairs underwater. Divers Alert Network (DAN) coursework. Experience in animal care. Experience in inventory management and related software. Experience in record keeping. Experience working on large teams and across departments. The ideal candidate will have PADI Divemaster certification or higher.
