Become a DAN Diving First Aid for Professional Divers Instructor
Ready to take your teaching skills to the next level? Join us for the DAN DFA Pro Instructor Qualification course, where you’ll be certified to teach one of the most recognized CPR/First Aid/Dive Injury programs in the industry. Led by Katie Shoultz Cooper and Sean Harper, this workshop is your chance to gain valuable skills and knowledge, all while preparing to lead your own DAN courses. Participants will be qualified to lead all three DAN Courses – DFA Pro, Basic Life Support, and Oxygen Administration. All materials included in the DAN IQC Instructor Pack (https://shop.dan.org/collections/trainer-resources/products/little-anne-cpr-manikin-w-qcpr-kit) are required to teach DFA Pro. They will be provided during our workshop, no need to travel with supplies. If your home institution has these materials, register “without backpack.” If you would like the Instructor Pack to be provided to you at DEMA, register “with backpack.”
What to Expect:
- HOMEWORK: The traditional format of this course is a 2-day workshop. Participants in the ADPA expedited course will have e-learning homework, a mandatory pre-course zoom session, and teaching presentations to prepare prior to arrival. Preparation is key to success.
- Early Registration: We highly recommend registering early so you can complete the required eLearning before the workshop. Katie will send out all the info you need to get started once you’re signed up.
- Pre-Class Zoom Session: Before the big day, you’ll meet with Katie in a Zoom session to review key materials and prep for the in-person class.
- Working lunch: Lunch will not be provided.

We’re excited to offer a unique opportunity to deepen your knowledge and engage directly with key members from the American Academy of Underwater Sciences this year. This interactive Q&A session will feature AAUS board members, providing the latest updates on new and upcoming products, services, and initiatives relevant to the diving community.
In addition to answering your questions, we’ll also explore how to leverage the scientific diving exemption in your operations, offering valuable insights for those looking to integrate it effectively.

Join us as we will have Dr. Frauke Tillmans, from DAN who will be speaking about the latest in diving research topics.
Bubble Variability in Individual Divers – This is based on the new bubble study being conducted by DAN.
General CCR Safety – Updates from the mouthpiece retaining straps survey and other related safety developments.
Post-COVID Medical Updates – As a member-at-large for UHMS, Dr. Tillmans can provide insights on global approaches to post-COVID medical evaluations.
Dr. Tillmans holds a degree in Neuroscience, and a PhD in Human Biology from the University of Ulm, Germany. She oversees research initiatives in diving injury and fatality monitoring, population health, and diving physiology including acute diving injuries as well as long-term health effects of extreme exposures. She is an avid diver, dive safety officer, and dive instructor. Her experience spans recreational, technical, rebreather, scientific, and public safety diving. Throughout her scientific career she has participated in numerous projects covering a variety of medical aspects in recreational, professional, and military diving. Since leaving a position at the German Naval Medical Institute in 2019 to relocate to the United States, she has become DAN’s point of contact for global scientific collaborations and oversees DAN’s research grant program and STEM-focused internship program, inspiring young scientists and prospective physicians to pursue a career in diving and hyperbaric medicine. Dr. Tillmans is also an adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and a visiting scientist at the University of California, San Diego.

Build Your Own Surface Supplied Dive System: The Nuts, Bolts, and Fittings of Diving
Ever wondered how to set up your own surface-supplied diving system? This workshop is for you! Join industry pros like Paul Dimeo, James Bonovich, and Jim McAlister as they guide you through everything you need to know about building, modifying, and servicing your surface-supplied equipment. Whether you’re a seasoned DSO or just getting started, you’ll gain valuable insights on diving system components and how to put them together.
What You’ll Learn:
- The Basics: We’ll start with an overview of different setups, like hookah vs. surface-supplied with communications, and walk you through essential components such as manifolds, valves, airlines, umbilicals, full-face masks, and more.
- How to Build & Modify Equipment: Learn how to modify traditional scuba equipment to fit surface-supplied systems. We’ll explain various adaptors, fittings, and valves, and show you exactly what to buy and where to get it.
- Hands-On Experience: You’ll leave with knowledge about how to service your equipment and function-test it. Plus, you’ll receive a take-home packet with all the key information organized for easy reference.
