ADPA Outreach Committee Update

By Arnold Postell

DSO and Senior Biologist, South Carolina Aquarium

I was able to represent ADPA as an instructor in the first AZA – Aquarium Design, Husbandry, and Leadership Program. This class was designed to offer professional development for aquarists generally in the 3-5 years’ experience level. It was hosted by Shedd Aquarium, Chicago, IL in May 2016. We spent a week at Shedd going over an incredible array of topics with a great balance of lecture and hands on.  Twenty three students were in attendance. I am happy to report it was a great experience with great response from everyone in both presentations.

Dive Safety in the Zoo and Aquarium Industry

Topic Description: This section of the Aquarium Design, Husbandry, and Leadership Program focused on occupational diving in the zoo and aquarium industry.  We reviewed the basics of occupational diving regulations as defined by OSHA, considered the tasks performed within our facilities, and begun to understand the choices for running a safe and compliant dive program. Considerations for AZA accreditation requirements and industry Example Practices were also discussed. Attendees learned about dive program management and how diving helps support the facility including husbandry and other departments. Husbandry specific topics were discussed, followed by an informative question and answer period.
